Seeking to demonstrate proof-of-concept for mid- to high-rise wood building structures, the University of British Columbia is constructing Brock Commons as an 18-story wood frame structure. The building will incorporate mass timber supports and cross-laminate plates in a floor-by-floor repetitive design. Russell Acton, the project's principal architect, said that $51.5 million project is about 8% more expensive than a design using traditional steel or concrete materials. However, a collection of wood industry advocate groups subsidized the added costs for the University to make the project viable.
